The
Temptation of Alice Acrylic on wood panel $3,000.00 Icon Statement: The Temptation of Alice explores one of the colorations between fairy stories and Biblical lore. When Christ fasted in the desert, the Devil tempted him to demonstrate his powers as proof of his divinity. Though it seems most natural that a divine being would appear strongest when performing amazing acts, the true strength of Christ is shown when he denies these abilities, becoming weak and humbling himself to the level of human. The figure of Alice in The Temptation of Alice represents an inquisitive innocence and purity, an archetype akin to that of the figure of Christ. Alice's temptations, though not necessarily evil, are represented by the Drag-Queen of Hearts. In this scene, Alice is tempted to stay and explore Wonderland. Though it seems most natural that a child would become lost in her imagination, at the end of the story, Alice must wake up and return to a boring world of rules and lessons. Even so, this little girl will never grow up in our minds. She remains a modern icon of distraction and distress, a representative of all those who are tempted to become lost in their dreams. post.beth@gmail.com 479.857.7860 |
